HOP YARD POLES |
Larch Poles / Logs |
We are now taking orders for poles. Please email us at sschmidt@schmidthops.com. Larch/Tamarack Logs/Poles:Our Hop Yard logs are Larch Trees cut 22 Feet long with a diamater of between 5 and 9 inches on the top. Please also note that Larch/Tamarack is logged in the winter months, harvesting the poles in the winter is very important and should be done for Locust, Cedar and Larch. When fall comes, the leaves and pine needles fall off of the tree and reduces the sap inside. If harvested in the spring when the tree pulls in moisture to produce leaves and pine needles, the trunk has much more water which then turns into sap. The more sap in the tree/pole when cut attracts bugs to eat the sap and then rots the pole faster. Locust, Cedar and Larch cut in the winter will last on average 5 years longer. You should also consider removing the bark on the whole pole or at least the bottom 5 feet and adding a wood preservative to your logs which can extend the life. We recommend using a foundation tar which will not leach into the soil. When Larch is treated you should be able to get 15/20 + years from them. **NEW** we also now sell RotBloc, a Non-Toxic Barrier Wrap preventing preamature ground line ROT of your hop trellis poles and fencing poles.
